Creating a Festival Compass prototype for the Estonian Film Institute

The more precise the positioning of a particular film, the more successful it will be in directing Estonian films to international festivals. Depending on the characteristics of the film (length, genre, theme, use of film language), it will fit better with one festival's program than another. A prerequisite for successful positioning is awareness of the specificities and "character" of festivals, which influence the composition of the film program.
To help the Estonian Film Institute direct its films to international festivals, the Centre for Semiotic Applications developed a prototype of Festival Compass. To do this, we conducted a metadata study using digital humanities tools and compiled comparative profiles of two film festivals (Cannes and Venice).
An additional goal of this work is to develop a methodology that enables the statistical study of cultural phenomena using digital humanities tools.
